Earlier this morning at approximately 1:00 a.m. the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a call near the intersection of Etienne Daigle Road and Raleigh Reed Road in Sulphur in reference to a man being hit by a truck.
The initial investigation revealed Mark E. Brock, 61, Sulphur, the driver of a pickup truck, was traveling northbound on Etienne Daigle Road when he struck a pedestrian who was walking in the middle of the northbound lane on Etienne Daigle Road. The pedestrian, Jonathan P. Hatfield, 42, Lake Charles, was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.
When deputies spoke with Brock they detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from his breath and he confirmed to deputies he had been drinking. After Brock performed poorly on standard field sobriety testing a warrant was obtained for a blood draw for toxicology testing.
Brock was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 1st; and vehicular homicide.
Several factors are believed to have contributed to the fatality including the area being dark with no street lights.

Note: In order for the mugshot to be released for the charge of vehicular homicide the suspect’s BAC must be greater than .20%. Brock’s BAC is pending toxicology testing.
