CPSO ARRESTS TWO FOR DWI 3RD

Lake Charles –

On April 20 at approximately 6:40 a.m. a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call near Woodell Lane and Myrtle Springs Road in Westlake in reference to a single vehicle crash.  When the deputy arrived he observed a white car that had traveled off the roadway and struck a tree.  When the deputy spoke with the driver, Shawn R. Powell, 38, Merryville, LA; he observed him to have an odor of alcohol emitting from his breath along with unsteady balance.  While the deputy was speaking with Powell he fell asleep multiple times.

Due to Powell’s impairment and risk of falling, the deputy did not conduct a standard field sobriety test.  Powell, who has 2 previous DWIs, was arrested and transferred to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office for a breath intoxilyzer test; which he refused.   He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 3rd.  Judge Michael Canaday set his bond at $36,000.

CPSO Deputy Kilieyn Wing is the arresting deputy on this case.

On April 22 at approximately 11:00 a.m. a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to a gas station in Vinton in reference to someone striking a barrier in an SUV and attempting to drive off.   When the deputy was in route he observed the suspect’s SUV heading northbound on Toomey Road.  The deputy observed the suspect to be driving erratically through traffic.  After initiating a traffic stop the deputy spoke with the driver, Theodore T. Wells, Jr., 33, Breaux Bridge, LA; who he observed to have slurred speech.  The deputy also detected an odor of alcohol emitting from his breath.

After Wells, who has 2 prior DWI arrests in 2016, performed poorly on a standard field sobriety test, he was arrested and transferred to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, where a breath intoxilyzer test revealed he was over the legal limit.  He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with DWI 3rd; and hit & run.  Judge Ron Ware set Well’s bond at $16,000.
