Lake Charles –
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is participating in the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign with grant funding from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. The 14-day campaign that starts today, May 22, and ends June 4, was created in an effort to save lives through awareness of increased seat belt use. This campaign comes ahead of the Memorial Day holiday, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will have increased checkpoints and increased officers on the road, aimed at targeting people not wearing their seatbelt.
“According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2015 seat belts saved an estimated 13,941 lives. An additional 2,814 lives could have been spared if they had been wearing their seat belts. This fact highlights the need for increased enforcement and awareness of seat belt use.” said Calcasieu Sheriff Tony Mancuso.
